アメリカ英語の数字の読み方

サンフランシスコに来てから1年半以上経ったがいまだに英語の数字になれない。例えばミーティングでユーザー数、QPS、インプレッション数などについて話すときにぱっと数字が口から出てこない。100 以下の数字は日本語の時と同じくらい自然に出てくるのだがそれ以上だと考えないと出ない。小切手を書くときにも金額をアルファベットで書かないといけないのだが難しい。そういう背景もあって http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_numerals の中から関心のあるものをまとめた。


以下の一部はアメリカ英語の習慣を含むのでイギリスやインドの英語を勉強している人は注意。

  • hundreds は単数形
    • 100 (one hundred)
    • 900 (nine hundred)
  • thousands も同様に単数形
    • 1000 (one thousand)
    • 10,000 (ten thousand)
    • 85,000 (eighty-five thousand)
    • 100,000 (one hundred thousand)
    • 999,000 (nine hundred ninety-nine thousand)
  • 4桁の数字で 10 の位以下が 0 でない場合
    • 1010 (ten ten)
    • 1103 (eleven hundred three)
    • 9999 (ninety-nine hundred ninety-nine)
  • 4桁の数字は2桁ずつ読む場合もある
    • 2659 (twenty-six fifty-nine)
    • 4105 (forty-one oh five) 0 は oh
    • 1981 (nineteen eighty-one) 1981年
  • 数えるのではなくてラベルとして使われた場合（What’s your room number?)
    • 101 (one-oh-one)
    • 110 (one-ten)
    • 334 (three-thirty-four)
  • 大きい数字
    • 1,000,000 = 10^6 (one million)
    • 1,000,000,000 = 10^9 (one billion or a thousand million)
    • 1,000,000,000,000 = 10^12 (one trillion)
    • 1,200,000 = 1.2 million (one point two million)
    • 250,000,00 (two hundred fifty million)
    • 23,380,000,000 = 23.38 billion (twenty-three point three eight billion)
